Parl Panel Met Representatives of Twitter, Amazon & Telecom Operators Over Concerns of Data Protection

The joint parliamentary committee (JPC), citing the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 has asked Twitter to submit an affidavit and a written apology over their negligence in showing Ladakh as part of China. The committee also asked representatives of telecom operators Reliance Jio and Airtel to depose before the panel over the issue of data security.
The parliamentary panel has asked Twitter for a written apology and has declined the verbal apology given by the company earlier. The panel was appalled by the company’s mistake of citing an incorrect map and raised questions about the same.
The panel has also scheduled the meeting with Reliance Jio Infocomm and Jio Platforms to have two different sittings on November 4. While representatives of Amazon met the panel members on Wednesday where the company was questioned about data gathering and storage particularly concerning cloud computing services AWS.
The Personal Data Protection Bill launched in December 2019 seeks to provide for the protection of personal data of individuals. The panel said that it expects big companies like microblogging site Twitter to be vigilant over sensitive issues like using an incorrect map, which can hurt the sentiment of people across the nation.
