PM Modi launched a new fisheries scheme and an application for farmers to manage livestock through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) on Thursday. The PMMSY scheme will add strength to Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) with an estimated investment of Rs 20,050 crore from 2020–21 to 2024–25.

PMMSY focuses on sustainable development concerning the White revolution (dairy sector) as well as the Sweet revolution (apiculture sector). PM will also launch other initiatives for the animal husbandry sector and fisheries in Bihar, ahead of the assembly polls.

The PMMSY is expected to enhance fish production by an additional 70 lakh tonne by 2024–25. The boost in fish production will increase export earnings and will supposedly double the incomes of those associated with fishing.

E-Gopala app, an online digital medium would help bridge the information gap by providing solutions relating to vaccination, pregnancy diagnosis, and calving. It would act as a comprehensive breed improvement marketplace and provide information to farmers about potential Government schemes launched to help them.

The PM will also inaugurate two units of ‘Fish on Wheels’ at Patna and will also interact with the farmers on the occasion. The initiative aims to infuse technology for value addition in the sector of animal husbandry and fisheries. The scheme marks the highest ever investment in the fisheries sector. It will provide digital assistance facilities to the farmers which didn’t exist previously. The move will help generate income, enhancing fish and milk production as well as productivity in the nation.
