Prime Minister Modi’s appreciation of several indigenous apps on “Mann Ki Baat” last Sunday has leveraged many of them to the top 10 on play store. The move is an attempt to boost the “self-reliant India” campaign. It also harnesses India’s potential to achieve growth in the app development sector that is unparalleled anywhere in the world.

The AatmaNirbhar Bharat App Inovatiovation Challenge was launched by the Prime Minister on 4th July. It witnessed the participation of 6,940 tech entrepreneurs and start-ups across the nation. Two-third of the submissions were from the tier-II and tier-III cities. The challenge was launched under eight broad categories- office Productivity & Work from Home, Social Networking, E-Learning, Entertainment, News, Health & Wellness, Business including Agritech&Fintech, Games.

The apps that shot to the top 10 include Chingari, CaptionPlus, Your Quote, Logically (news app) 2, Koo(micro-blogging site), Voot Kids, and Aarogya Setu (health care).

This shows that talent exists in our country and Indian entrepreneurs can sustain technology solutions to serve Indian citizens as well as the world. The challenge was launched just days after India banned popular Chinese apps such as TikTok, Shareit, and CamScammer. PM Narendra Modi has always encouraged innovation and start-ups in India to make it in India for the World. Such moves will make India self-reliant and ensure that data transmitted over the server will be stored locally in the country. The result shows that India is much capable to build its own applications and even scale it to a world-class level.
